Scott Midgley's Design Portfolio

Scott Midgley is a designer and master builder of custom furniture.

The Toledo Blade had this to say about his work:
“Everything he does is custom. All his work,
whether it’s a small stool or a big entertainment center,
bears the marks of craftsmanship which are rapidly fading from the furniture scene.”

The Blade article went on to say, “From a few sketches and some conversation,
he creates one-of-a-kind pieces that are both stylish and timeless. Although he may not sign all his work,
behind every piece of Midgley furniture stands the mans himself – not an icon for style, not a fashion statement,
but a human being who cares about wood, about design and about technique.”

After graduating from the University of Toledo he studied woodworking at the University of Idaho
and then in Rochester, New York with America’s foremost wood sculptor and furniture maker, Wendell Castle.

Mr. Castle’s work is in a number of major museums including The Museum of Modern Art,
The Metropolitan and The Boston and Philadelphia Museums of Art.

These furniture-quality cabinets were designed by Scott Midgley for a contractor who wanted to bring a Southwestern motif to the room. The hand carved door slats and detail work express an over-all concern with quality and individuality.

Using wood as the medium, Scott Midgley designed and made this rocking chair to illustrate the harmonics of simplicity, form and function. Remarkably comfortable, the five individually bent cherry wood slats represent the staff lines in music while the rocking motion implies rhythm. The graceful arching rockers provide gentle motion.

An example of designing furniture to fit and enhance awkward locations. This piece gives the area charm and utility by allowing use as either a desk or a serving table.

Created by Scott Midgley as a horizontal wood sculpture in the form of a simple table. The piece uses space and shadow to create visual interest in a contemporary style.

This unique piece was designed and built by Scott Midgley. Hand work techniques, for example carved ball and claw feet on cabriole legs, were blended with austere lines and unusual proportion of form and function as an object d’ art. This cabinet stands 6 ft. tall.

This table is an update of the traditional, using inlay and exotic veneers. It has simplicity of form with subtle ornamatation. It is an excellent example of in-shop veneer pressing which allows the use of exotic woods.

The unusual dimension of the room and the client’s objective of creating a mood of stability and permanence led to the design of this formal conference table. It features muted inlays and moldings.

This unique dining table was conceived by an interior decorator and executed by Scott Midgley. The design features a pedestal center for existing chairs. Painted and stack laminated, the unusual relief carving around the base and top captures the eye and gives creative symmetry to the set. It is also an outstanding example of decorative painting.

This work illustrates the creative blending of two disciplines – interior architecture and furniture making. Built by Scott Midgley to the design of an architect, this imposing conference table is the center piece in the board room of the world headquarters of a Toledo-based corporation: Dimensions – 19th long and 5 ft. wide with a dramatic ash veneer inlay on a cherry wood top.
This wall unit illustrates Scott Midgley’s ability to work in virtually any size. Measuring 9 ft. wide by 7 ft. high, the unit was designed and built to enhance the interior design of the room and to meet the exact functional requirements of an entertainment center with generous storage space.

Custom made furniture can be comparably priced with high quality manufactured lines, however, it differs dramatically in its individuality and workmanship. Of particular significance to the interior decorator or designer of homes and offices, is the freedom that custom made furniture provides for their imagination and it’s ability to blend, or match colors, sizes and finishes to existing schemes.

It has been said; an artist paints not with his hands, but with his mind – The designer’s education and experience must concern itself with what furniture has to say, as well as how it says it.
